China’s Censor Frowns on Korea's Most Popular Film

The all-time leader for ticket sales in the history of Korean film, "The King and the Clown", has failed to make it past the censor in China.

The film failed to pass the censors at the state Administration of Radio, Film and Television due to the fact that it deals with a love affair between two men, an insider with music and film distributor Face said Monday.

But the film did receive permission for DVD distribution from the Culture Ministry, which oversees videos and records.

The DVD is expected to go on sale this week. Even before it cleared the final hurdle, pirated copies of the film started to appear in major Chinese cities since June 5. In Beijing DVD stores, it sells for about 10 yuan (1 Yuan = W118.23).

The Chinese government last year created a department to oversee standards of imported cultural products to strengthen control over "foreign influences" and up the barriers for import, industry insiders say.
