Korean TV dramas reach out further

Three MBC dramas - "Dae Jang Geum (Jewel in the Palace)", "Gung (Palace)" ("Princess Hours") and "Hotelier" - were sold to the Middle East and Africa this month, taking the Korean Wave out further to even more distant countries.

"Dae Jang Geum" was sold to Jordan's top distributor MEM on May 8 and will be aired throughout the Arab nation soon, MBC said Sunday.

A few episodes of the popular drama set in the Joseon Dynasty palace kitchen were introduced to the Arab world in February and received a warm welcome, which led to the signing of the contract.

The Middle East's interest in Korea's historical TV dramas is expected to grow through the fusion historical drama "Gung" ("Princess Hours"), whose export terms MBC is discussing with MEM. The drama has already been sold to China, Taiwan and the Philippines.

MBC also sold the broadcast rights of its drama "Hotelier" to Ghana's TV3 earlier this month.

Boy band back to be all over Asia

Shinhwa, a six-member Korean boy band, released its eighth album Sunday, kicking off "Shinwha 2006 Asian Tour in Seoul".

With the single "Once in a Lifetime", they will start a five-month promotion tour across Asia, including mainland China, Hong Kong, Singapore and Japan. For Japanese fans, they have made their first single in Japanese "Bokurano Gokoroni Taiyouga Aru (There is a sun in our heart)".

The band debuted in 1998, making it the longest surviving idol group in Korea.
