"Become used to an anguish", said the writer of 'White Tower'

Lee Ki-won, screenwriter of 'White Tower' of MBC, offered advice and personal experiences to aspiring writers. 'Inside the White Tower' that made him famous was based on a Japanese novel.

"When I first read the original work, I was shocked and there was something about it", said screenwriter Lee Ki-won. "I had conflicts because my first work could be an adaptation not creation of an original work. However, I decided to adapt the original novel, considering that there would not be many opportunities to work on well-made original works", Lee explained. "Now it is acclaimed that the drama opened a new chapter as a medical drama. However, there were many who thought that the drama would fail in early days of its airing, considering that it excluded the love story. 'Inside the White Tower' is about continuous challenges to satisfy human desires and the process of overcoming difficulties. That' why so many people found Dr. Jang Joon Hyeok attractive and supported him", he added.
Lee practically lived at hospitals and law firms for 2 years to make up for his lack of knowledge in medicine and law. He worked hard on this work so much so that he produced 500 sheets of paper a week. As a result, he could establish himself as a writer and earn another opportunity. "Be accustomed to despair" is the first advice he gives to aspiring writers. "The success of a first work rarely brings another success. A writer should prove himself with a work. Even in despair, a writer should shake off the past and rise to produce a good work", he said. He is now working on scripts for 'Jejoongwon' of SBS, following 'White Tower' and "Spotlight" of MBC. 'Jejoongwon' is a human drama that centers on Jejoongwon, the first modern hospital in Korea. It follows a butcher's son who becomes a doctor despite difficulties. It is scheduled to air in Oct. "I became a drama writer by chance after looking for genres to communicate with the public", Lee said, who wanted to be a mystery writer.
