Animation Festival Currently Underway in Chuncheon City

In Chuncheon, Gangwon Province, one of Asia's most popular animation festivals is underway. The Chuncheon Anitown Festival is now in its eighth year, offering both children and adults a look into the world of animation.
Cartoons are generally thought to be entertainment for children. When people grow up, they seem to forget how much time they used to spend watching their favorite cartoons.

For adults who want to go back to their childhood and for children who want to enjoy a variety of animation works, they can go to Chuncheon in Gangwon Province. "The five-day festival offers visitors a chance to gain a deeper understanding of animation through free screenings of renowned industry films, exhibitions on popular cartoon characters as well as conference and workshop sessions", said one organizer.

Hundreds of people attended the opening ceremony to watch the famous Japanese animation film entitled "Gochikame", the opening movie of the festival. The comedy action film about a small-town policeman was a smashing hit when it was first screened in Japan back in 1999.

15 full-length animation films, mainly from the U.S. and Japan, and short films from Eastern Europe and Asia are also being featured this year.

Organizers say this festival is designed for visitors to have fun rather than for the business community. "We do not have anything like trade show or trade fair exchanging information and programs between companies and between countries. We try to pay attention to workshop and conference".

Visitors can get up close and personal with internationally renowned artists in the conference and workshop sessions.

"I also stopped by the animation museum in Chuncheon, and was great to see various animation works from home and abroad. I hope the Korean animation industry will improve and become comparable to that of other advanced nations", said one visitor.

The fast growing Korean animation industry has set record-breaking sales in Europe this year, raking in US$22 million worth of contracts. Organizers say the industry can make enormous contributions to the nation's economy in the future. The imminent task will be to cultivate the field to increase its market share in the U.S.-dominated global industry.
