Andre Kim's collection lights up Hawaiian night

HONOLULU, Hawaii - Korea's veteran designer Andre Kim lit up the Hawaiian night as more than one thousand fashion fans flocked here Wednesday to watch top Korean movie stars and models parade down the catwalk in Kim's lavish costumes.

The show held in the Hilton Hotel Coral Ballroom was jointly organized by KBFD - a Korean TV channel in Hawaii - and the University of Hawaii at Manoa's College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources (CTAHR) to celebrate the broadcaster's 20th anniversary and raise funds for the school.

"This event is seen not only as a charitable event, but one which will be a magnificent learning opportunity for the students and faculty in our program", said CTAHR Dean Andrew Hashimoto before the show. "We look forward to receiving Andre Kim and his celebrity models from Korea and sharing his culturally unique production to benefit out fashion design program".

The 70-year-old Korean designer has done a variety of charity shows and received numerous awards and accolades for using fashion as a medium to bridge cultures and create goodwill around the globe.

"Andre Kim Fashion Art Collection for 2007 Spring/Summer" exhibited 141 pieces of Kim's new spring and summer collection with actors Jung Joon-ho and Shim Ji-ho, and actress Kim Min-jung, taking to the stage as special guest models.

The show's curtain raiser "White Fantasy for 2007" was a set of sparkling white suits that fused feminine with futuristic designs, romantically embellished with Kim's expert flower and pearl decorations.

Actor Jung Joon-ho, the hero of the movie "My Boss, My Teacher", received enthusiastic applause from the audience as he marched down the runway in a white tuxedo.

The main collection celebrated the coming warm season with afternoon suits and summer coats in pearl-gray, violet, emerald-green and baby blue, along with beautiful evening and concert dresses in splendid floral prints.

Kim also presented his collection of spring jackets and evening gowns vividly decorated with masterpieces by Michelangelo, Raphael and Gustav Klimt.

In the grand finale, actor Jeong and actress Kim, dressed in a smart tuxedo and a spectacular wedding gown, glided down the runway together as a loving bride and groom.

On Tuesday, Kim held a show to celebrate SBS Open LPGA global golf tour at the Turtle Bay Resort, in which Korean golf divas Ahn Shi-hyun and Christina Kim (Kim Cho-rong) took to the stage in Kim's golfing and evening dresses.

Christina Kim received especially warm applause after she walked perkily down the catwalk.

"I was very satisfied with Kim's graceful pose", designer Kim told reporters before the show.

Following the events here, Kim will give another show in Shanghai as the opening event of "Preview in Shanghai" to be held by the Korea Federation of Textile Industries to present Korea's excellent textiles and high fashion in China.

Kim has already proven his popularity in China through three previous shows in 2004 and 2005.

In May, Kim will fly to Washington, D.C. for a Unicef charity fashion show.
