'Poetry' sweeps 47th Daejong Film Awards

"Poetry" by Lee Chang-dong took home four prizes including Best Picture at the 47th Daejong (Grand Bell) Film Awards, Friday in Seoul. The annual event is largely regarded as the country's equivalent to the Academy Awards.
"Poetry", the fifth feature to be written by the novelist-turned-director and former Culture Minister, also won the Best Screenplay Award. It took the same prize at Cannes earlier this year and has drawn rave reviews for its emphatic insight into crimes and redemption. Lee won the Best Picture award for "Peppermint Candy" at the 37th edition of the Daejong Awards.
"Poetry's" lead actress Yoon Jung-hee was named Best Actress. The role marked a return to the screen after a 17-year hiatus for the 66-year-old Yoon; she won the same award at the event 16 years ago for "Manmubang".
Her co-star, veteran actor Kim Hee-ra, was awarded the Best Supporting Actor prize, which he shared with Song Sae-byeok, who played a memorably comic character in "The Servant", an erotic twist on a local folktale. The latter period film was also noted for Best Costume.Youn Yuh-jung won the Best Supporting Actress award for "The Housemaid - 2010", which was invited to show in premier international film festivals including Cannes and Toronto.
Meanwhile "Moss", Kang Woo-suk's dark, big-budget thriller based on a popular comic strip, also swept four honors, including prizes for Best Director, Sound Effects, Art Direction and Cinematography.
Won Bin was named Best Actor for his role in "The Man From Nowhere", the year's highest grossing film. The hardboiled action film by Lee Jeong-beom also took two other prizes including those for Best Visual Effects and Editing.
Kim Tae-gyoon's football drama "Barefoot Dream" took home two trophies, for Best Production and Music.
Meanwhile, the event spotlighted new emerging talent, giving the Best New Director prize to Jang Cheol-soo of "Bedevilled", which was widely noted among critics and festival-goers since its stellar debut at Cannes' Critics' Week. Lee Min-jung was named Best New Actress for her role in the romantic comedy "Cyrano Agency" while Jung Woo was chosen as Best New Actor for his performance in "Wish".
Special tribute awards went to veteran film stars Shin Young-kyun, who recently made headlines for donating 50 billion won, and Choi Eun-hee, for their contributions to Korean cinema.
